Hate is Not the Opposite of Love; Apathy is.

“The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it’s conformity.”
—Rollo May (1909-1994), American ordained minister turned existential psychologist.

So who said “Hate is not the opposite of love; apathy is.”? May did, in his 1969 book Love and Will. That was adapted by Elie Wiesel in 1986 to “The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference,” which is ironically better known.

Another interesting May quote was way ahead of its time: “Lacking positive myths to guide him, many a sensitive contemporary man finds only the model of the machine beckoning him from every side to make himself over into its image.”

He said this in …1967!
