Not Even Once!

The Faces of Math
Before & After

If you didn’t already know: René Descartes (1596-1650), Isaac Newton (1642-1726), Albert Einstein (1879-1955), and Stephen Hawking (1942-2018).

(Hat Tip to local STEM teacher John McKinnon.)

OK, Per My Mail, lot of you don’t get this one, even with the “not even once!” and “Satire” category hints. I think that’s a sign that my readers are older/wiser/smarter than most who get mixed up in this, which is certainly a good thing! Here’s what it’s a satire of:

One of many examples from the “Faces of Meth” campaign — methamphetamine. Typically, they’re mug shots from various jails on first arrest (which may or may not be a drug-related charge) and a later arrest. Example after example might cause kids to think twice about trying meth.

And “not even once”? A nod to how addictive it is.

In the This is True world, you’ll see examples going back at least 10 years.

Parodies are of course common. Here’s one featuring Jennifer Anniston:

Yeah, I don’t think she turned into Iggy Pop….

Hope that helps!

Randy Cassingham is best known as the creator of This is True®, the oldest entertainment feature on the Internet: it has been running weekly by email subscription since early 1994. It is social commentary using weird news as its vehicle so it’s fun to read. Click here for the site — basic subscriptions are free.

Comments? Sorry: Facebook retired their commenting system (they didn’t even bother to alert me). Just as well, I suppose, but sadly there is no way to recover the many hundreds of comments made on this site. Lesson learned: never rely on someone else’s site for prime functions, especially “social media”!

Since this site is mostly retired now (maximum of one new post per month), I did decide that since all comments are now gone that I would not attempt to install any new commenting system. -rc
