Down With the Losers

July 9, 1776: After hearing a reading of the newly adopted Declaration of Independence, New Yorkers “Destroy History” by toppling a statue of King George III.
And That’s Why No One Knows Who Won the American Revolution.

And what did they DO with the statue once it was knocked off its mighty perch? About half was melted down to make 42,088 bullets to shoot at the king’s soldiers! (Other parts, such as the king’s head, were carried away.) (Source)

The painting: Pulling Down the Statue of King George III by William Walcutt, retrieved from National Archive. It depicts an actual event at the Bowling Green in New York. (Click the pic to see larger.)
